Bound, Unbound, Rebound
Solo Exhibition Jan.3-Feb.1 at Mercury 20 Gallery Reception Jan.12 from 2-4 PM
Early in her career as a printmaker, Sher pushed traditional boundaries, using tangled ropes and bags as metaphors for the societal constraints she faced as a mother, wife, professor, and artist. Working on paper and canvas, she later reproduced classical images of nudes binding them with painted rope, symbolizing both modesty and frustration.
After 4 decades Sher revisits the imagery of rope. Using deconstruction and abstraction, digital and handwork to expand on and blend past and present techniques. Formal devices, squares and stripes—echo the earlier boundary of the etching plate while other works offer a transition to a looser interpretation. These new rope works offer profound reflections on the female experience today when artistic vision's power is perhaps more important than ever.
