Portrait of the Artist as a Sucker
This series self-portraits are reflection on reflections, both the physicality of works by other artists and the implications of appropriation. The images, while manipulated, were not distorted, but what the camera saw in the curve of the sculptures of lollypops by Jeff Koons. Things are not always what they seem.
”Sher’s use of digital imagery in unexpected forms attests to her belief in the democratizing power of technology as she layers and echoes formal themes into an interconnected series.”
- Dr. Amalia Mesa-Bains, Director Emeritus of Visual and Public Art, California State University Monterey Bay

Portrait of the Artist Still a Sucker

SMOKE SCREENS
As Covid-19 made travel impossible, I sought refuge at a cottage on the Russian River in western Sonoma County, where everything was shuttered, and time seemed to stand still. My satellite studio became my sanctuary, a unique kind of artist residency amidst the uncertainties of Covid-19 and the bizarre weather patterns wrought by increasingly intense climate change. Then came the fires, dense smoke, eerie bright orange skies, and devastation. Limited visibility and unsafe air, prompted me to photograph through a window screen, accentuating the lack of clarity in the air and the news.
