Morocco Seen and Unseen

Inspired by images created during my residency at Green Olive Arts in Tetouan, the exhibition title and the four "Filtered View" images serve as metaphors for both the architectural window coverings, known as mashrabiyas or "harem windows," elements of traditional Arabic architecture, and the outsider's experience of Moroccan culture as a tourist. These wooden screens mainly cover the windows of women's quarters. The other images reflect my filtered view of the culture - encompassing art, architecture, landscape, food, colors, textures, smells, and people. When at a residency I make small images that evolve when I return to my Oakland studio. I exhibit these on a “drawing wall” both to show some of the source material but also as stand alon e artworks.
